Jumbo Pharaoh
Large-bodied wild-type Coturnix quail selected for meat and egg production. Jumbo Pharaohs retain the classic brown Pharaoh plumage and are feather-sexable as juveniles.
Egg characteristics
Cream to light tan eggs with dark brown mottling or speckling. Jumbo lines often produce somewhat larger eggs than standard Coturnix. Shell pattern varies naturally from hen to hen.
Temperament
Generally calm and manageable when raised with regular human contact. Like other Coturnix, they can startle and flush vertically when frightened, so secure housing is important. Jumbo Pharaoh lines are commonly described by breeders as calm or docile.
Sexing
Feather-sexable as juveniles. Females develop a lighter breast with dark speckling; males develop a more solid rust/cinnamon breast with little or no speckling. Sex differences often begin becoming visible around 3 weeks of age and become clearer as the birds mature.
Care notes
Provide a high-quality game bird or quail ration appropriate for age, constant clean water, good ventilation, and secure housing. Coturnix mature rapidly and need adequate protein during growth. Housing should prevent injuries from their strong vertical flight response and should avoid overcrowding. Maintain dry bedding or clean flooring and monitor social groups for aggression, especially among mature males.
Additional notes
Jumbo Pharaoh is a size-selected version of the classic Pharaoh/wild-type Coturnix, not a separate species. “Jumbo” describes body size, while “Pharaoh” describes the traditional wild-type plumage. Individual size, egg production, and hatch results vary by bloodline and management.
